The Sir J.J. School of Art is one of the pioneering institutes of fine art education in India, established in 1878 with a generous donation of Jamshetji Jijibhoy, after which the school is named. John Griffiths, who became Principal of the School in 1865, conducted a now-famous student project of copying the murals in the Ajanta Caves temple complex, a project with which Walter Spink was undoubtedly familiar. Perhaps when the Ajanta Caves were finished, the students moved on to the Ellora Caves, as is the subject of the current work. The school's alumni include several famous artists, notably MF Hussain, SH Raza, VS Gaitonde, and Ram V. Sutar.
Condition Report: Overall good condition. The colors good. Minor creases along the upper and lower edges, Trimming along the extreme edges. Remnants scattered along the edges with attendant areas of minor surface skinning, all verso. The sheet is loose, not matted.Unframed Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
