Parthian / Achaemenid / Romano British Metal Fibulae

Near East / Western Asia, Parthian or possibly Achaemenid, ca. late 1st millennium BCE; Romano-British, Imperial Period, ca. 1st Century CE. A lovely set of 3 metal fibulae: 1 Parthian or Achaemenid and 2 Romano British. Made from tin lead alloy, the first brooch is in the form of a sheep shown striding in profile with a thick, striped body as it lifts its petite head. The second fibula is Romano British and cast from bronze to display the form of a trumpet. Also Romano British, the last example presents the form of a dragon with a sinuous body, long snout, and flared tail. Both Romano-British pieces are adorned with cobalt and scarlet enamel. Size (of largest): 2.375" W x 2" H (6 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Trumpet-form fibula is wearable, though not recommended for wear. Sheep and dragon are not wearable. Sheep missing ears, one front leg, bottom half of back legs, tail, and pin. Other front leg of sheep reattached with break line visible. Sheep's head is bent with some loss and very delicate. Dragon is missing pin. Trumpet is repaired from 2 pieces and missing pin fastening. Liberal remains to enamel on Romano-British pieces. Otherwise, all are very nice with lovely patina.
