Parthian / Sassanian Carnelian Bird Amulets (2)

**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Parthian to Sassanian (Sasanian, Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd century BCE to 7th century CE. A wonderful pair of charming avian amulets that are hand-carved from carnelian boasting warm vermilion and citrine hues. Each figure is of a slender form, with incised striations on the breast and tail indicative of feathers, and several petite cavities inlaid with darker resin. Each drop-form head peers forward with petite eyes and has a rounded cranium as well as a petite, conical beak. Size of largest: 1.75" L x 1.1" W (4.4 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: private Toronto, Ontario, Canada collection, by descent, acquired in Egypt in 1894 to 1896

Condition Report: Both pieces have light abrasions and small chips to resin inlays commensurate with age, otherwise intact and very good. Wonderful preservation to overall avian form and great surface smoothness throughout.
