------ 1898
The House was founded in 1898, based on a patent, thanks to the meeting of two men with exceptional knowledge. Two entrepreneurs - inventors: one a leatherworker, Mr Charles Bonnardel, the other a tanner for 3 generations, Mr Francisque Bornex who joined forces to launch the first luxury leather goods object; the revolutionary “Sans Couture” purse.
1900
The brand's first creation, nicknamed "Le Sans Couture", won the silver prize at the Paris Universal Exhibition. Assembled by rivets rather than seams, Sans Couture is revolutionary for its extreme resistance. Still made today in France, it has become the icon of the House.
1900-1907
A huge Le Tanneur factory is built in Belley and employs 70 workers: the First Luxury Leather Goods Industry is born and the “famous know-how of the little hands of the Tanner” opens the way to industrialization which will bring wealth to all the meanings of the term of a brand, a region, a city.
Boosted by this success, Le Tanneur won the hearts of professionals and the brand opened two stores in Paris on the Grands Boulevards. The first Le Tanneur advertisements for stores appeared in the Journal des Bazars in July 1907.
1914
The Tanner, recognized for the quality of his articles, was chosen in 1914 to equip the French Army with bags, straps, boots, gaiters and leggings and received the Gold Medal from the Lyon International Exhibition.
1923
Guillaume Gianinetto at the head of the House for more than 40 years.
Barely 26 years old, he has the passion and talent that will propel Le Tanneur and its innovative products into a new era by infusing it with the culture of a modern, industrial, communicative company. The culture of a retailer brand with which he will build, from Paris to Marseille, thanks to his sense of commercial relations, the Le Tanneur spirit which remains alive today among all the brand's distribution partners.
1955
Hundreds of posters are plastered on the roads of France and appeal to motorists with the slogan “Le TANNEUR leather goods: beautiful leather gifts”. To complete this unique campaign, Le Tanneur published catalogs, which were printed in up to a million copies in 1970.
1960
Its range of leather goods, comprising 750 items, triumphs in the hearts of the French, with sheathing which embodies the height of luxury.
Le Tanneur offers cigar cases, manicure kits, photo frames, pencil cases. . . covered or sheathed in precious leather. It was at this time that the watch and jewelry boxes appeared which would become emblematic for La Maison, still on sale today. They become “intimate and luxurious companions in the daily life of the French”.
1963
In 1963, General de Gaulle, visiting Belley, received a magnificent box-calf office set and a leather jewelry box for his wife. It is also said that the Aga Khan was a lover of these office adornments.
1978
In the 1980s, Le Tanneur launched the school brand TANN's, which was a dazzling success with its slogan "Ta ton Tann's". The House created its first "vanity cases", briefcases and men's bags which they adopted immediately.
1980-1990
The rejuvenation and feminization of the brand began with the appearance of the first lines of handbags. Notably with the launch in 1987 of the “Roland Garros” sport-emotion line in canvas and leather with a strong entry into colors.
1986
Le Tanneur breaks with classicism to open up to the Luxury and Fashion market. Styling makes its entry into the house, color also with a fashionable spirit in its collections, thus seducing modern women. The ranges of bags in full grain cowhide and coated cotton canvas combine all of La Maison's know-how with exceptional flexibility and details such as stitching and carabiners borrowed from the world of saddlery.
2006
The Le Tanneur woman travels by plane with luggage designed by Air France and Le Tanneur, a limited edition collector's line.

The birth of Madeleine
Madeleine is our exceptional line entirely made in France. For this line, we have given free rein to our know-how. It is made in the Pays de la Loire from fulled taurillon, this exceptional leather found in the Basque country, in a family tannery in Espelette. It is a silky leather, very supple. Ornaments such as jewelry, in brass, gold and palladium, are also made in France, a stone's throw from Lake Geneva.
2020
Le Tanneur launches the La Maison concept. It’s about embodying all the French art of living and leather goods know-how in our stores to tell a story, provide our customers with an experience and leave an imprint in their memory that goes beyond the product.
2023
On the occasion of its 125th anniversary, the House is creating the Le Tanneur museum within its Parisian showroom to present a selection of archives and emblematic lines retracing its history.
