Catalogue Note:
The Calatrava has occupied a singular position within Patek Philippe’s history since the introduction of reference 96 in 1932, establishing a design language defined by purity and proportion. During the 1940s, however, the manufacture occasionally allowed this classical architecture to become more expressive, creating watches with sculpted, flared and elaborately stepped lugs, today known as “fancy lug” Calatravas.

Introduced in 1945, reference 2407 is a wonderful example of this philosophy. Produced only in small quantities until about 1950, the reference is rarely encountered, with examples in pink gold appearing particularly infrequently at auction. Measuring 32 mm, its stepped case is distinguished by spectacular sculpted lugs with pronounced longitudinal ridges. Seen from the side, their complexity becomes particularly apparent, giving the watch an almost flamboyant character entirely at odds with the apparent simplicity of the dial. The silvered dial features pink gold dot indexes contrasted by bold, faceted double indexes at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock, their geometric forms recalling the Art Deco vocabulary of the period. Importantly, the case retains wonderful definition, with the multiple ridges of the lugs clearly visible and the hallmark present and legible.

Combining classical restraint with unexpected extravagance, the present reference 2407 is accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.
