Catalogue Note:
Patrick Scott’s best abstract work is beautifully balanced, and gives the appearance of total effortlessness. Gold Painting 3, 4 is one of these magnificent objects. The Goldpainting series is arguably his most significant body of work. He began using gold in the early 1960s and it utterly transformed his practice. The gold leaf required a huge amount of calculation and nothing could be left to chance, which led to the development of these very precisely defined forms. The series gradually progressed compositionally from simple arrangements of forms, usually discs or grids, towards more complicated configurations. He was very influenced by Agnes Martin and her style of minimalism, and it was his desire to create paintings which had physical presence and interplayed texture. The use of the gold leaf against the bare linen of the canvas is one of these tools, and similarly the layered translucent washes of the white paint, gradually build in to these wonderful arcs.
For Scott the integration of circles in to his work was important as they were to him a profound symbol of fulfilment. It was a theme from early in his career and then reappeared in the 1940s, taking a clearer form with the Devices works in the 1960s. These highly meditative works employ the circle as a reference to the sun. Although not a practicing Buddhist he found influence in the Zen ideology, and the consistency that they consider our star represents. In Gold Painting 3, 4 the gold disc sits between these sweeping shapes, an orb almost hanging between worlds. His open minded consideration of spirituality flows through his work and lends itself to a contemplative reading of his painting.
