Paul Conrad (American, 1924-2010) No, Just Cautious, Denver Post newspaper cartoon, 1960 India ink on heavyweight paper 13 x 12 inches (33.0 x 30.5 cm) (image) Signed lower right: P. Conrad Editorial cartoonist Paul Conrad won his first Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1964 while at the Denver Post, where he began his career and worked from 1960 to 1964. In 1964 he moved to the Los Angeles Times to be that newspaper's chief editorial cartoonist to 1993. His work was syndicated to hundreds of newspapers throughout the world, and in 1971 and 1984 he won two more Pulitzer Prizes for Editorial Cartooning. This handsome original cleverly depicts Uncle Sam maintaining his distance from India's leader Jawaharlal Nehru as the black cat of "Appeasement" crosses Nehru's path. During the Cold War of the 1950s and 1960s India, with its anti-colonialist and nationalist background, found it advantageous to steer a neutralist path between the USA-led West and the Communist Bloc countries led by the Soviet Union. Many in the USA regarded this as appeasement. Mr. Conrad inscribed this original "Best Regards, Mr. Harris" and added his first initial "P" to his signature at lower right. Murray A. Harris was a noted collector of comic and graphic art. HID03101062020 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.comxTexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
