Paul Harris (American, 1925-2018), The Good Tablecloth, Shut-in Suite VIII, 1969 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Paul Harris (1925–2018) was an American sculptor and printmaker whose work moved freely between figuration and abstraction. He trained at the University of New Mexico, later earned an EdD from Teachers College at Columbia University, and studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown. After settling in Bolinas, California, in 1963, Harris began turning discarded mattresses and clothing into sewn, stuffed sculptures that made familiar domestic materials feel psychologically charged. His 1969 fellowship at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop produced the Shut-in Suite, based on the confined apartment where he lived while making the prints. Harris’s work appeared in American Sculpture of the Sixties and the influential exhibition Sewn, Stitched and Stuffed.

The Good Tablecloth, from Shut-in Suite VIII, 1969, published 1970, color lithograph from stone and zinc in brown-green and violet with gold self-adhesive Fasson foil collage on white uncalendered Rives paper. A white cylindrical vessel stands on a sharply angled tabletop covered by closely spaced horizontal gold lines, with the foil reflecting portions of the surrounding violet, olive-brown, and dark brown geometric planes. Printed by Larry Thomas and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite along the lower verso “The Good Tablecloth,” signed and dated by the artist, and marked “Tam. Imp.,” with the Tamarind and Thomas blindstamps at lower right; the verso is additionally inscribed “2811 / uncalendered Rives BFK.” “Tam. Imp.” identifies an impression retained by the workshop outside the numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 30 x 22 inches. The sheet shows light handling with a few faint surface scuffs and small marks in the reflective foil collage. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
