Paul Klee was a Swiss-German painter, draftsman, printmaker, and art theorist, as well as a central figure of Classical Modernism. His distinctive visual language combines abstraction, the use of signs, music, and poetry. After studying in Munich under Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck, Klee became associated in 1911 with the circle of *Der Blaue Reiter* (The Blue Rider), founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. A trip to Tunisia in 1914 marked a turning point: inspired by the North African light, he increasingly liberated color from the mere depiction of nature, employing it instead as an independent artistic element. From 1921 to 1931, Klee taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau at the invitation of Walter Gropius. He subsequently held a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy before being dismissed by the National Socialists in 1933 and returning to Bern. Despite suffering from a severe illness, he produced an extensive body of late work there. Klee died on June 29, 1940, in Muralto, near Locarno.
