Paul LENGELLE (Paris, 1908 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1993) – Air Force Painter in 1936
The “Strasbourg”
Gouache, signed and titled in the lower left corner.
Height: 47.5 cm. Length: 99.5 cm. In good condition. (Rare and very minor pinholes).
Launched in Saint-Nazaire in 1936, the Strasbourg housed a seaplane hangar. These are the ones visible in the background of our artwork. In 1940, it escaped the attack on Mers-El-Kébir. On board was Marin-Marie, who would vividly describe this tragedy. Having taken refuge in Toulon, the ship was scuttled in 1942 to prevent it from falling into German hands. Raised in 1944, it was sunk shortly thereafter by American bombing raids in preparation for the Provence landings.
