Paul LaCroix fruit still-life oil painting on canvas, 1865 in original frame Offered for sale is an original fruit still-life oil painting on canvas by the American painter Paul LaCroix (born in France in 1827 - d. New York, 1869). The painting depicts a still-life with yellow apples, plums, grapes, and nuts. The work is signed "P. LaCroix, N.Y., '65" in the lower left. The painting is presented in the original 19th century frame with the original beveled stretcher. The canvas has been relined and the paint is very stabile; It has achieved some patina since. The verso has illegible handwritten notations probably by the artist and reference notations taped on. Originally from France, LaCroix immigrated to New York sometime before 1855. Cities such as New York and Philadelphia received foreign artists who left their countries to escape the revolutions of 1848. European artists such as LaCroix brought with them Dutch, German, and French traditions of still-life painting. He began exhibiting in 1863. LaCroix was active for only a short while in New York and Hoboken, New Jersey. Paintings by LaCroix hang in world best museums such as the Brooklyn Museum, New York City, Springfield Museum of Art, Ohio, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid. Canvas, 14"W by 10"H.
