Paul Loring (American, 1899-1968) Hello Pals! I Just Thought I'd Watch for a While, Providence Bulletin newspaper cartoon, circa 1940 India ink, pencil, watercolor, and gouache on heavyweight paper 13 x 13 inches (33.0 x 33.0 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Loring New England artist Paul Stetson Loring was born in Portland, Maine. He contributed cartoons to newspapers and magazines throughout the United States and was best known for his editorials published in the Providence Journal-Bulletin (Rhode Island) over 33 years. He also drew a humorous panel cartoon titled This Really Happened; he was an accomplished watercolorist, and his editorial cartoons often had a painterly look. In this handsome original President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who loved fishing, checks in on his Democratic Party buddies and his chance of securing the nomination for president for an unprecedented third term in 1940. It is a splendid portrait of FDR. President Roosevelt was afflicted by polio and lost the use of his legs in 1921. He was only able to stand with the use of leg braces, by supporting himself at a podium, or leaning on his aides. Despite being an active and successful politician, he was rarely seen in public and never depicted in newspaper photographs or cartoons in his wheelchair. This was the convention of the time, and the press cooperated fully. HID03101062020 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.comxTexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
