Paul Smith and Bob Wiacek Uncanny X-Men #167 Story Page 10 Original Art (Marvel, 1983). Paul Smith's tenure with Marvel's mighty mutant team was relatively short-lived, contributing art for a mere nine issues of the title during its 1980s heyday. Still, his legacy is forever enduring thanks to such indelible contributions as the Morlocks, Lockheed the dragon, Madelyne Pryor, Storm's iconic mohawk, and Kitty Pryde's legendary "Professor Xavier is a jerk!" outburst, to name a few. Smith's first issues, however, came at the tail end of the X-Men's first cosmic epic since the conclusion of "The Dark Phoenix Saga", where the team was transported to deep space to fight a race of insectoid, parasitic, extraterrestrial beings called the Brood! Upon the seeming defeat of the alien hive, the team returns home only to discover their mentor and leader, Professor Xavier, has been implanted with a Brood Queen egg which quickly hatches and attacks the heroes -- destroying Xavier's body in the process! This epic fight scene featuring Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Colossus battling the aliens' leader was created using ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Discolored text paste-ups, production clipped corners, notes in the margins, whiteout corrections, and light staining and handling wear.
