Paulus Potter è stato un pioniere nella pittura di paesaggi con animali. Scene di fattoria e dipinti di animali su piccola scala divennero popolari in Olanda a partire dalla metà del XVII secolo. Potter era un artista precoce; le sue prime opere risalgono al 1640, quando avrebbe avuto 15 anni. Potter nacque a Enkhuizen e probabilmente fu formato da suo padre, che si era stabilito ad Amsterdam nel 1631. Nel 1646 Potter viveva a Delft e lì si unì alla corporazione dei pittori. Si trasferì all'Aia nel 1649 e ad Amsterdam nel 1652, dove morì due anni dopo. Sembra che abbia influenzato direttamente Karel Dujardin, attivo ad Haarlem, e il pittore di Amsterdam Adriaen van de Velde. Le sue acqueforti e i suoi dipinti devono aver avuto un'influenza formativa anche per le scene di bestiame di Cuyp degli anni Quaranta e Cinquanta del Seicento.
Questo dipinto è in qualche modo meno raffinato e maturo rispetto ai dipinti successivi. Nel 1944 Paulus Potter aveva solo 19 anni.
Esiste una copia di questo dipinto realizzata dal pittore Albert Jansz Klomp passato all'asta a Francoforte il 5 dicembre 1934 (lotto 66, vedi foto in bianco e nero allegata) . Albert Jansz Klomp fu allievo del giovane Paulus Potter ed è ipotizzabile che copiò il dipinto originale del suo maestro.
Il nostro dipinto e' stato in qualche modo danneggiato e successivamente mal restaurato. Necessiterà di un nuovo buon restauro.

Paulus Potter was a pioneer in the painting of landscapes with animals. Farm scenes and small-scale paintings of animals became popular in Holland from the middle of the 17th century. Potter was a precocious artist; his earliest works date from 1640, when he would have been 15 years old.
Potter was born at Enkhuizen and probably trained by his father, who had settled in Amsterdam by 1631. By 1646 Potter was living in Delft and joined the painters' guild there. He moved to The Hague by 1649 and to Amsterdam in 1652, dying there two years later. He seems to have directly influenced Karel Dujardin, who was active in Haarlem, and the Amsterdam painter Adriaen van de Velde. His etchings and paintings must also have been a formative influence for the cattle scenes by Cuyp of the 1640s and 50s.
This painting is somehow less refined and mature than later paintings. In 1944 Paulus Potter was only 19 years old.
There is a copy of this painting made by the painter Albert Jansz Klomp seen at auction in Frankfurt on 5 December 1934 (lot 66, see attached black and white photo) , Albert Jansz Klomp was a pupil of the young Paulus Potter and it is conceivable that he copied his master's original painting.
Our painting was at some point damaged and badly restored. It will need a new good restoration.
