A magnificent Russian silver-gilt, cloisonné and plique-à-jour enamel tankard, of octagonal form in Russian Renaissance style, domed slip-on lid with pierced ball finial and floral bands, the upper half body with a braided rope brim and stylized flowers on a green ground below, the lower half body divided into arched panels separated with twist columns and decorated with conforming flowers on a gilt ground, the base with a braided rope brim, bottum finished with a brightly coloured vignette in plique-à-jour enamel depicting an eagle vanquishing a serpent. Pavel Akimov Ovchinnikov, marked with the Imperial Warrant as purveyor to the Imperial Russian Court, assayer Anatoli Apollonovich Artsibashev, Moscow town mark, 88 standard. C. 1895. Weight c. 634 g. H. 21 cm.
