um 1530 beauftragte der Herzog Federico II. von Mantua den Maler Antonio da Correggio (1489-1534) mit der Erstellung einer Serie aus vier erotischen Darstellungen der Liebesabenteuer des Jupiter [Zeus], neben "Jupiter und Danaë", "Leda mit dem Schwan" und der "Entführung des Ganymed" galt vorliegendes Motiv "Jupiter und Io" als das erotischste, in allen vier Episoden überlistet Jupiter die sich sträubenden weiblichen und männlichen Geliebten, indem er in ganz subtiler Weise sie zum Beischlaf nötigt, war es bei Danaë der "Goldregen", so hat Jupiter sich im vorliegenden Motiv in dunklen Nebel verwandelt, der Io umfängt, in Ovids "Metamorphosen" ist zu der Szene zu lesen "... Sie [Io] aber floh [nach den Annäherungsversuchen des Jupiter] schon, hatte bald die Weiden von Lerna hinter sich und die baumbestandene Flur im Bergland von Argos, als plötzlich der Gott über das weite Gefilde Finsternis zieht und es einhüllt. So hemmt er die Flucht und raubt Io die Unschuld. Mittlerweile schaut Juno [die eifersüchtige Gattin des Jupiter] gerade auf die Gefilde hernieder und verwundert sich, wie bei hellem Tag sie ein flüchtiger Nebel mit Nacht deckt ...", lediglich die zarte Andeutung einer Hand die Ios Hüfte berührt und ein dunkles, zum Kuss ansetzendes Gesicht deuten den für Io unsichtbaren Liebhaber an, das Original galt als Meisterwerk der Aktmalerei, fein lasierende Kopie, Öl auf Leinwand, 2. Hälfte 20. Jh., links unten signiert "Pelikán", restauriert, schön gerahmt, Falzmaße ca. 61 x 44 cm.

Around 1530, Duke Federico II. of Mantua commissioned the painter Antonio da Correggio (1489-1534) to create a series of four erotic depictions of the amorous adventures of Jupiter [Zeus]; alongside "Jupiter and Danae", "Leda with the Swan" and the "Abduction of Ganymede", the present motif "Jupiter and Io" was considered the most erotic, In all four episodes, Jupiter outwits the reluctant female and male lovers by subtly forcing them to have sex. Whereas in Danae it was the "golden rain", in the present motif Jupiter has transformed himself into a dark mist that envelops Io... But she [Io] was already fleeing [after Jupiter's advances], soon had the pastures of Lerna behind her and the tree-covered meadows in the mountains of Argos, when suddenly the god draws darkness over the wide expanse and envelops it. In this way he impedes their flight and robs Io of her innocence. Meanwhile, Juno [the jealous wife of Jupiter] is looking down on the realms and marvelling at how, in broad daylight, a fleeting mist covers them with night ...", only the delicate hint of a hand touching Io's hip and a dark face about to kiss indicate the lover who is invisible to Io, the original was considered a masterpiece of nude painting, finely glazed copy, oil on canvas, 2nd half of the 20th century, signed "Pelikán" lower left, restored, beautifully framed, folded dimensions approx. 61 x 44 cm.
