Description: Pennsylvania Curly Maple Flintlock Fowling Rifle
Jacob Fordney, Lancaster, PA, Circa 1830-1850
Having a full curly maple stock with shallow carved cheek piece, mounted with a shaped forestock plate, patinated brass trigger guard, and butt plate and with a quillwork engraved patchbox, side plate, and toe plate, supporting a 46-inch patinated cast-iron rear sighted octagonal barrel with applied brass blade front sight, inscribed J. Fordney / Lancaster, PA near rear sight, with a later flintlock with plate stamped Steinman & Son / Lancaster, PA. Developing oxidation throughout flintlock with frozen trigger mechanism to hammer; oxidation reducing towards the barrel with a few instances of minor pitting; isolated stress cracks throughout stock, particularly near pipe mounts further up the muzzle; minor, aged indentations to stock, particularly near cheek piece; adhesive tape applied over the ramrod onto the stock; ramrod possibly of a later date.
