[Penny (Edward) After]

The Death of General Wolf, a more intimate scene than the more familiar one by Benjamin West, the dying General comforted by two attendants, historically Captain Hervey Smythe and Dr Thomas Hinde, while a third soldier, in the uniform of the 40th Grenadiers, points to a distant figure bringing news of the French defeat at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, at Quebec, during the North American campaign of the Seven Years War, mezzotint with original hand-colouring, heightened with body white, on laid paper, 350 x 250 mm, pale even browning and some fine spotting, only really visible in the title field and on verso, minor dampstaining upper centre and upper left, very minor lead white oxidisation, reduced margins, occasionally to the platemark; The Marquiss of Granby relieving the Distressed Soldier and his Family, equestrian portrait of John Manners, Commander-in-Chief of the British army during the Seven Years War, also after Edward Penny; and The Wounded Hussar, after George Carter, both mezzotints with original and later hand-colouring, heightened with body white and gold, each c.350 x 250 mm., some browning, reduced margins, occasionally to the platemark, occasional spotting and each with a short tear, all three Robert Sayer & John Bennett, 1779 (3)
