More information: Gabbeh Ghashghai carpets (also Kashgai, Gashgai) are knotted by the nomadic Ghashghai tribes in the mountainous highlands of southwestern Iran. These nomadic and now mostly semi-nomadic shepherds and weavers have lived for centuries in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and southern Isfahan. Today the vast majority are concentrated in the area around Shiraz, the former centre of the Persian Empire. In the past, the Ghashghai tribes roamed twice a year between their winter pastures near the Persian Gulf and summer pastures in the cooler Zagros mountains. Carpets and the art of carpet making, as well as kilims, bags, saddlebags, tents, ribbons and other woven ornaments, are an important part of nomadic heritage and culture. Today these decorations are highly valued and adorn many modern homes around the world. Ghashghai carpets are made with wool and hair from the sheep, goats and horses of the tribe.
