Personal Effects of WW II Hero Rev. Frederic Gehring, Padre of Guadalcanal; the lot contains artifacts from the life of Rev. Frederic Gehring, known as the "Padre of Guadalcanal". These include; 1) his biretta, 2) a white stole showing a red cross, 3) his Mid Century Modern telephone directory with hand written entries, 4) collection of thirteen ink stamps, 5) Pop Warner Super Sport Award dated 1984, 5) four military style hats, three American Legion, one Catholic War Veterans, 6) a Tucky leather travel bag, and 7) copies of assorted papers telling the story of Rev. Gehring including the "Miracle Girl", Patsy Li. All pieces are in good condition showing wear from use by Rev. Gehring. The biretta shows wear on the ridges and a tear on the front; the stole shows some staining; the telephone directory and award each show a light layer of soiling. For reference, the biretta measures 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 4", the stole measures 4 1/2" x 82", the award measures 9" x 10" x 16". Please note, Rev. Gehring was one of the first Vincentian Fathers to volunteer in the US Navy, he was the first Navy Chaplin to receive the Legion of Merit from the President, and the Presidential Unit Citation for heroic rescue work behind enemy lines. A true War Hero.
