Marcel Pagnol. Signed autograph corrected proof of Act 2 of Phaethon.

Act 2 typescript of 15 pages with numerous handwritten corrections (around thirty lines) as well as indications and signature on the cover of the green paper sleeve and explanations of the corrections for the editor on another sheet. This set is enriched with debris forming act 3 of the printed scene with scattered corrections from the last rereading. Format in-4, undated (1926) . Annotations in black ink by Pagnol and pencil.

“Phaéton” is a play in 4 acts whose first performance will take place in December 1926 at the Monte-Carlo theater and then repeated in Paris immediately afterwards.

The piece will be published in 1937 in illustration then by Fasquelle in 1954 under the title “Jazz”.

This play recounts the fall and death of a Greek professor from Aix-Marseille University, Professor Blaise. During the revival in 1942, Harry Baur was accused of playing the role of a communist and arrested. The play offers numerous moments on the meaning and nature of study, on the brevity of life, on the fragility of passion.

Marcel Pagnol (1895 – 1974) became famous with Topaze, a play created in Germany in 1927 (one year after the proposed document) then presented at the Théâtre France in October 1928. He founded his own production company and studios in Marseille in 1934. cinema, and made numerous films with the great actors of the period (in particular Raimu, Fernandel and Pierre Fresnay) , including Angèle (1934) , Regain (1937) and La Femme du boulanger (1938) . In 1946, he was elected to the French Academy. After 1956, he moved away from cinema and theater and began writing his Childhood Memories, including: My Father's Glory and My Mother's Castle. He finally published, in 1962, L'Eau des collines, a novel in two volumes: Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, inspired by his film Manon des sources, made ten years earlier and starring Jacqueline Pagnol.

This document is very interesting since it was written when Marcel Pagnol had not yet experienced success with his childhood memories or his great plays. Indeed, Marcel Pagnol was 31 years old. He therefore decides for himself and is not bound by his editor, which is shown by his numerous corrections.

Marcel Pagnol's dedications, dedications and autographs are quite rare, especially the authentic ones. This unique piece allows you to see a working document of one of the greatest French writers of the 20th century and to visualize how he corrected and annotated his pieces. Marcel Pagnol's working documents and corrected proofs are extremely rare.
