Republic silver Proof Pattern Sol 1886-RD PR65 NGC, London mint, KM-PnE26, Guttag-Unl., Flatt, "The Flawed Peruvian Proof Coins of 1886" (American Journal of Numismatics 2, 1990), Plate 16, 2. By Leonard Charles Wyon. An extraordinary Pattern in all respects and one that perfectly pairs historicity with an outstanding visual allure. Proposed as a modernized and refined design for the nation's coinage following the conclusion of the War of the Pacific in October 1883, this splendid design concept perfectly captures the beauty that would be present in Peruvian numismatics for decades to come--on the obverse, Liberty is seated stoically supporting a liberty cap-on-pole against a vibrant background bathed in an iridescent chroma, a full swath of mirrored gold, sky-blue, and violet hues spilling over onto the reverse. Owing to mint mismanagement and the rearrangement of the government in the final year of the conflict, dies produced earlier in the year and suffered serious deterioration from lack of use. To help restore public confidence in the regime, the government commissioned Royal Mint engraver Leonard Charles Wyon to design a new coinage based on samples of earlier-issued pieces. According to Horace Flatt, in addition to hubs, dies, collars, and matrices, Wyon produced nine silver Proof sets for the 1886 Patterns at the Royal Mint, recording one such set in the ANS Collection, and one example of the Un Sol Pattern in the British Museum. According to our research, not a single other specimen of this denomination has come to market since the appearance of this coin in 2008, with the type altogether missing from the Norweb, Guttag, and Whittier collections. Ex. Millennia Collection (Goldberg Auction 46B, May 2008, Lot 1202)
