Peter Hurd was an American painter known for luminous landscapes, portraits, and scenes of ranch life in New Mexico. Born in Roswell, he left West Point to pursue art, studying under N. C. Wyeth in Pennsylvania and later marrying Wyeth’s daughter, painter Henriette Wyeth. After settling near San Patricio, New Mexico, he made the surrounding Hondo Valley and its residents central subjects of his work. Working especially in watercolor and egg tempera, Hurd combined precise detail with a sensitive treatment of light, capturing the spaciousness and quiet character of the Southwest. He also introduced egg tempera to his brother-in-law, Andrew Wyeth.
