Weiterführende Künstler und Begriffe: Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham, Peter Weibel, VALIE EXPORT, Peter Kubelka, Heimo Zobernig, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Franz West

Peter Kogler is an Austrian media, installation, and computer artist. He is considered a pioneer of an artistic practice that combines digital image production, architecture, and the perception of space. Since the 1980s, he has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary featuring recurring motifs such as ants, brains, tubes, light bulbs, and network-like structures. Kogler studied first at the School of Arts and Crafts in Innsbruck and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He began using the computer as an artistic medium as early as 1984. He increasingly translated his initially two-dimensional drawings, graphic works, and screen prints into immersive, walk-through installations: printed panels, projections, computer animations, video, and sculpture cover walls, floors, and ceilings, transforming exhibition spaces into visually dynamic, labyrinthine environments. At the heart of his work lies the experience of space as a system of perception, communication, and control. Kogler’s technical grids and organic-looking visual symbols create a tension between real and virtual space, body and network, and individual orientation and visual overload. His work has been featured at documenta IX and X in Kassel and the Venice Biennale, and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, mumok in Vienna, and Kunsthaus Bregenz, among other venues. From 1997 to 2005, he headed the class for computer and video art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; since 2008, he has been a professor of graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. He lives and works in Vienna. Further artists and styles: Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Dan Graham, Peter Weibel, VALIE EXPORT, Peter Kubelka, Heimo Zobernig, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Franz West
