Peter Lanz Hohnstedt (American, 1872-1957) Hill Country Cactus Oil on canvas 26 x 26 inches (66.0 x 66.0 cm) Signed lower right: PL Hohnstedt PROVENANCE: Private collection; By descent to the present owner. Born in Ohio, Peter Hohnstedt was self taught. After settling in San Antonio in 1929, he moved to Comfort, Texas. In the early 1940s, the artist painted in the surrounding countryside including the Big Bend, Pecos River areas, and Mexico. He exhibited extensively, and his work can be found in the collection of the Witte Museum, San Antonio. Even in these charming late works, Hohnstedt never ceased to be inspired by the Texas landscape.

Condition Report: Unlined canvas; canvas is slight slack; one incomplete puncture to the center of the canvas, with slight associated paint loss; one small scratch with paint loss to the upper left corner, most noticeable upon close inspection; craquelure to the upper corners; surface dirt from what appears to be a previous frame in the upper left corner. Framed Dimensions 30.5 X 30.5 Inches
