(1577-1640)
Wild boar hunt, pen and brown ink, red and black chalk, brown wash, on laid paper with watermark "Shield and postal horn ", 56,8 x 38,5 cm, vertical central crease, browned, stained, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Private collection, Germany.

The present drawing is related to the painting „The Wild Boar Hunt“ by Peter Paul Rubens (c. 1616) in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (inv. 962, oil on canvas, 137 x 168,5 cm). The sheet shows the main group of the composition with the hunting dogs and the two horsemen in the center. Several versions after the painting exist. They all derive from the circle of Rubens or from his followers. The present drawing may be ascribed on a stylistical basis to the circle of Rubens and was presumably executed as a study after the painting. A preliminary drawing for the painting by Rubens is preserved in the Albertina Museum in Vienna (inv. no. 15.097); another preparatory drawing for the composition is kept in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin (inv. no. 593).
