A monograph on the life and paintings of Flemish Golden Age painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), illustrated with 551 black and white plates. It was the first catalogue raisonne of Rubens' paintings published in Germany in 1905. The text is in German, the plate descriptions are in English, German and French.

"P.P. Rubens, Des Meisters Gemaelde in 551 Abbildungen", by Adolf Rosenberg, published by Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, Stuttgart and Leipzig, 1905, first edition, first printing. Published in the series Klassiker Der Kunst in Gesamtausgaben. It was the first ever series of artist monographs, the first attempted catalogue raisonne of famous master-painters of Renaissance and Baroque. Therefore, these monographs have a high art-historiographic value.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat. He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition.

Carl Adolf Rosenberg (1850-1906) was a German art historian.

Rosenberg was born as the son of a Prussian merchant in Bydgoszcz and attended secondary school in Berlin and Cologne. He studied classics and archeology at the University of Berlin. He became a prolific writer on the arts and is known best for his illustrated biographies and catalogs on Rubens and Rembrandt.
