In the final phase of the war, his artistically gifted mother made her way to West Berlin with her son, where the two settled after the end of the war. Keil grew up there in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting - particularly in expressionist artists and in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.

Keil's works of art can be found in galleries, museums, hotels and private collections around the world and are very popular as decorative objects or as investments.
