Peter Sengl (geb. 1945 in Unterpremstätten bei Graz) zählt zu den eigenwilligsten Positionen der österreichischen figurativen Malerei. Seine detailgenauen, häufig grotesk überzeichneten Kompositionen verbinden Phantastischen Realismus, Surrealismus und Elemente der Pop Art zu einer irritierenden Bildsprache, in der menschliche Körper, Tiere, Alltagsgegenstände und Konsummotive miteinander kollidieren. Die technisch präzise, beinahe altmeisterliche Malweise erinnert dabei an Rudolf Hausner, während die provokante, bisweilen verstörende Darstellung von Körperlichkeit und Verletzlichkeit Berührungspunkte zu Gottfried Helnwein aufweist. Sengl interessiert sich weniger für eine idealisierte Wirklichkeit als für deren Verfremdung: Vertraute Motive erscheinen deformiert, fragmentiert und psychologisch aufgeladen. Peter Sengl (born 1945 in Unterpremstätten near Graz) represents one of the most distinctive voices in Austrian figurative painting. His meticulously detailed and often grotesquely exaggerated compositions blend Fantastic Realism, Surrealism, and elements of Pop Art into a disconcerting visual language in which human bodies, animals, everyday objects, and consumer motifs collide. His technically precise, almost Old Master-like painting style is reminiscent of Rudolf Hausner, while his provocative—and at times disturbing—depiction of physicality and vulnerability shares common ground with the work of Gottfried Helnwein. Sengl is less interested in an idealized reality than in its estrangement: familiar motifs appear deformed, fragmented, and psychologically charged. It is precisely this combination of seemingly banal objects and an ambivalent, sometimes brutal imagery that establishes Sengl as a unique figure in Austrian art, occupying a space between Fantastic Realism, grotesque figuration, and Pop Art.
