Peter (Petrus) Simon Pallas (1741-1811) , German naturalist, geographer and explorer, was appointed a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg in 1767 and, sponsored by Tsarina Catherine II, undertook expeditions through Siberia and the southern Russian Empire in 1768-1774 and 1793/1794.

The atlas volume seems to be complete - a map lies loose in the book (see photo) .
