Pham An Hai is a renowned Vietnamese artist whose unique blend of abstraction and personal interpretation captivates art enthusiasts worldwide. Born in Hanoi in 1967, he graduated from the Hanoi Institute of Fine Arts in 1995 and received his Master's in Painting from the same school in 2006.
Initially focused on expressionistic techniques, Pham An Hai soon transitioned towards abstraction. He drew inspiration from landscapes and cityscapes, infusing seamlessly both personal interpretation and beliefs into these themes within his artworks. The resulting paintings pulsate with dynamism, vitality, and a profound sense of spirituality. Over the years, his oil paintings have become larger and bolder, with layered and richly textured canvases.
In Untitled - Summer, the artist showcases his fascination with seasons, which he frequently chose as subjects for his paintings. His belief that colours are "the purest form of expression" is made obvious here: he skilfully uses black, white, and red paint to depict a vibrant cityscape during the summer season. In the distinct black shapes created through bold strokes, one may recognise buildings and streets. The scorching red background both conveys and intensifies the heat and brightness of the city, while strategically placed patches of white add contrast and light. The overall composition exudes energy and movement, immersing the viewer in its bustling atmosphere.
