Philip Andreevich Maliavin (1869 - 1940) Russian
Pencil on Paper
Measure 7 1/4"in H x 4 1/4"in W and 10 1/2"in H x 7 1/2"in W with frame

Known for: Figure, genre painting
Name variants: Filip Andreevic Maliavine, Philippe Maliavine, Filip Maliawin, Filip Andreevic Maljavin, Filip Malyavin, Philip Andreevich Malyavin
Biography: Philip Andreevich Malyavin was a prominent Russian portrait painter. A student of Repin, he was known primarily for his sympathetic paintings of peasants with their brilliant color. On occasion he did an official portrait such as that of A. Lunacharsky and made sketches for one of Lenin. He eventually settled in Paris with his family. Dr. Pavlov was of course celebrated for his behavioral studies with dogs. Maliavin grew up in the village of Kazanka in Samara province. The vivid and intricately patterned textiles seen in Maliavin's work directly reflect the Kazanka peasants' traditional clothes, while infusing an infectious cheerfulness. In Three Babas, the women are a jumble of rich colors and patterns; they are larger than life, filling the canvas to the edges and dwarfing the monastery and windmill in the distance. Most likely painted after Maliavin's emigration in 1922, the work offers a nostalgic glance at the artist's homeland.
