Born in Quebec, Canada, Philip Boileau, known as the painter of "fair women", had a long-time career as a painter of fashionable women, their portraits, figures and heads. He began his career in Baltimore and then moved to New York where he lived on Long Island. His wife was Emily Gilbert, a drama student, whom he had married in 1907, and she became the model for many of his best-known pictures,
