Magnificent painter, who specialised in animal themes. He trained at the Royal Academy, and was initially a portrait painter, through the influence of his tutor, Allan Ramsay (1713 - 1784). He later gave up this genre to become a naturalist painter, and became widely renowned. In 1812 he became an academic at the Royal Academy.
