During his lifetime, Philips Wouwerman was a very beloved artist and grew to become the most successful Dutch painter of equestrian scenes in the seventeenth century. He specialised in the depictions of horses and he sets this noble animal in many great battle scenes, hunting parties and more intimate landscapes. Wouwerman’s technical perfection and elegant subjects were even more sought after in the eighteenth century than during his lifetime. His work can be found in the collections of numerous museums and noble families worldwide.
The present lot depicts a white horse resting and eating in the dunes after bringing in the day’s catch. The horse is being fed near its cart filled with nets by a fishman dressed in blue and red. On the right side we see several figures and a dog resting in the shadow of the erected cart. To the left side of the painting some figures walk down the dunes to the beach where many fishmen are grouped together. The entire scene is bathed in a beautiful clear light which reflects on the horse’s coat. In this way Wouwerman sculpts with light the different anatomical parts of the horse and shows his skills as the most popular equestrian painter of the Golden Age.
The attribution of the present lot has been confirmed by Dr. Birgit Schumacher on the basis of photographs on the occasion of the auction at Christie's in 2009.
