The military operation to eliminate bin Laden, who was responsible for the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, was planned and carried out by the U. S. armed forces, by instruction of then president Barack Obama, executed by the special forces of the Navy SEALs Unit 6. The heroic operation took place on May 2, 2011 in Abbottabad, about 50 km north of Islamabad, capital of Pakistan. President Obama and his advisors followed the operation from the situation room in the White House. They were constantly updated in real time about the events via tiny cameras installed on the fighters' helmets. At the end of the raid, which took 38 minutes and was an unprecedented success, the fighters took off in helicopters with bin Laden's body, without casualties to the American raiding forces.

It is interesting to note that although the heroic rescue strengthened Obama's government and policies in the eyes of the American public at the time, opponents of Hillary Clinton in the presidential elections of November 2016 used this photograph in which Hillary looks weak and confused to present her as fearful and irresponsible, unfit to head the strongest country in the world.
