Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) is considered one of the best actresses of the late 19th century. She was born in Paris to a Jewish mother of Dutch descent; she was baptized at age 12. Bernhardt acted in plays in Paris and in London, and was considered the best actress of her time. She founded her own troupe in 1880, called "Sarah Bernhardt Theater," with whom she performed in most of the European capitals, in Canada, the United States, South America, Australia and more. She passed away in Paris in 1923.
