Photograph of the Jewish Brigade at the Western Wall, Including Ze'ev Jabotinsky (?), Jerusalem 1918

[ translate ]

Unique photograph, taken at the Western Wall a short time after the liberation of the Land from Ottoman occupation, depicting soldiers of the Jewish Brigade visiting the Western Wall. One of these soldiers is apparently Ze'ev Jabotinsky, who served as an officer at the British Army headquarters in Jerusalem.
The Jewish Brigade was a brigade established by Ze'ev Jabotinsky and Joseph Trumpeldor. It was comprised of Jewish soldiers and fought in the battle for the Land of Israel. Jabotinsky himself was trained for the military in Britain after he was already a famous Zionist activist, and he arrived in the Land of Israel as an officer. Jabotinsky spoke a lot in Jerusalem and encouraged people of the city to enlist in the Jewish Brigade. He served as the commander of the first company during the brigade attack on the bridge at Umm El-Sharat and its capture from the Turks. Following this he was appointed as an officer at the headquarters of the British Army in Jerusalem, and apparently it was during this period that the photograph before us was taken.
Ze'ev Jabotinsky (1880-1940) was a famous Zionist leader, writer, poet and translator. Together with Trumpeldor, he established the Jewish Brigade, which was the basis of the Jewish force fighting in the Land of Israel. He was an Irgun commander, leader of Beitar, founder of the Revisionist movement and one of the most prominent Zionist thinkers of his time.
20x26 cm. Placed in a frame.
Fine-very fine condition, minimal blemishes to the margins of the photograph.
