Catalogue Note:
More jewel than watch, the present piece brings together the extraordinary jewellery watchmaking of Piaget with the elegance of Cartier.

Reference 3879 N38 belongs to one of Piaget’s most distinctive designs from the late 1960s, a period of remarkable creativity for the manufacture. Its tiny rectangular watch is almost lost within an exceptionally broad yellow gold bracelet, intricately worked to give the metal the appearance of woven fabric. Known examples of the reference were fitted with colourful hardstone dials, including lapis lazuli, tiger’s eye and malachite.

Sold to New York on November 27, 1969, the present example is particularly striking for its rich green jadeite dial signed Cartier. Prized for its intense colour and naturally occurring bands, no two pieces of malachite are ever quite alike, making each dial unique. Powered by Piaget’s diminutive manually wound calibre 6N, the watch perfectly captures an era when the boundaries between watchmaking and jewellery almost disappeared.
