PICTORIAL MAP OF THE UNITED STATES 1849. New York: Ensign and Thayer, [ca. 1849.] Sheet 44" x 32.25".*** An attractive hand-colored map providing a view of the United States as it was in the mid-19th century. Of interest here are California and Texas, both of which are shown to their fullest extents. The gold regions of California are here colored in yellow, and Texas appears without its stove-pipe configuration seen in later versions of the map. San Francisco here appears as Yerba Buena, and this is one of the few maps which identifies San Francisco as such. The map shows the boundaries of the United States following the Mexican-American War, which ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo. Mexico ceded 55% of its territory, including the present-day California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, much of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming.
Condition Report: Map has been backed with tissue, repairing various chips (some loss) and tears mostly to margins but also a few tears to the map itself. The whole with toning, some small stains or soiling. Offered as-is.
