[ translate ]

"Hazel Creek: The Life and Death of an Iconic Mountain Community" by Daniel S. Pierce, published by Great Smoky Mountains Association, 2017, 1st printing.

Soft cover [a little wear]; 6" x 9"; 119 pages including Index, one page corner fold, very good condition; illustrated with photographs.

Today Hazel Creek is located within the boundaries of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but the area and former community has had an extraordinary history. It has been the home of famous writer Horace Kephart, a mining boom town, a lumber boom town, and finally a bust town and focus of a 60 year dispute over the building of the North Shore Road.

The family of the Moses Proctor's spent about 144 years in the Hazel Creek area. They were forced to leave when the Fontana Dam was built in 1944 in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The Federal government promised to build North Carolina 288 to connect Bryson City to Hazel Creek, Proctor and the cemeteries in the park. But so far the promise-in 1944 has not been honored. This book tells about the family of the Moses Proctor's settling Hazel Creek and Proctor and shows photos of Moses Proctor and his son in law Joseph Washington Welch.

Dr. Daniel S. Pierce teaches Appalachian history at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. He is also the author of "Corn from a Jar."
