Together with Christian Dotremont, Alechinsky formed the driving force behind the Belgian Department of the Cobra Group. In 1954 Alechinsky came into contact with Chinese painting through the Chinese painter Walasse Ting. In addition to Chinese influence, Japanese art had an important influence and he began to show an interest in oriental calligraphy.
