Pierre Alechinsky (1927): 'Traité des excitants modernes', etching and aquatint, ed. 36/125

Work: 41,5 x 33 cm
Frame: 61 x 61 cm

In 1989, Pierre Alechinsky discovered Balzac's 'Traité des excitants modernes' (Treatise on Modern Stimulants). In it, the writer describes the effects of alcohol, coffee, tea, and tobacco -poisons whose excesses produce serious disorders and lead to premature death. Alechinsky proposed illustrating this text, which deals with the relationship between vital energy and the visionary thought of art. However, the aim was less to translate Balzac's text word for word than to illustrate the style and universality of Balzac's thought.
