Pierre Ambrogiani, who was born on January 16, 1907 in Ajaccio and died in Allauch on September 23, 1985, was a French painter, engraver and sculptor. Pierre Ambrogiani comes from a modest family, settled in the old working-class district of Marseille. As early as 1920, he started to work at Marseille-Colbert as a dispatch carrier, then as a postman from 1928 to 1950 at the post office in Marseille. In 1936, helped by his friends André Malraux and Louis Aragon, it became one of the creators of the first Maison de culture of the province with his friends, the Marseille painters Antoine Serra, Louis Toncini, François Diana. "A very popular and colourful character of Marseille", Pierre Ambrogiani is a friend of Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. His workshop is located cours Estienne d'Orves, near the Old Port. He travels the countryside with his car that he uses as his studio, painting on the motif. He moved into a workshop at the Quai Rive Neuve in Marseille in 1943. Renowned for his brightly coloured palette, he paints southern landscapes, still lifes with fish. He also engraved many plates to illustrate works. In 1962, he decorated the church of the Immaculate Conception of Marseille with frescoes and stained glass windows. The mural of the baptistery is commented upon as follows: "With pure and unadorned graphics, engraved in cement and enhanced with very sober colours, the painter evoked, in the background, man at work in the modern world, from the fields to the cities and factories. But in the centre of the fresco, bathed in baptismal water, his whole body stretched out towards the light of the Spirit that gilds his face and his arms raised towards heaven, this man of the 20th century is born to divine life and becomes a new man. ” We owe him a postage stamp, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in 1961. Forced by illness and infirmity to stop painting in 1973, Pierre Ambrogiani died in 1985 and was buried in the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille. His body has been transferred to the cemetery in Sault, in Vaucluse. More than fifteen hundred paintings, seven sculptures, twelve hundred drawings and watercolours and three hundred prints were sold at public auctions.
