Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Roses

[ translate ]

A Century of Style: Works from the Collection of Audrey Zauderer
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
1841 - 1919
Roses

Bears the initial R (upper right)
Oil on canvas
7 7/8 by 11 7/8 in. (20 by 30.2 cm)
Framed: 14 1/2 by 18 3/8 in. (36.8 by 46.6 cm)
Painted circa 1910.

This work will be included in the forthcoming Renoir Digital Catalogue Raisonné, currently being prepared under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Plattner Institute, Inc.

This work will be included in the second supplement to the Catalogue raisonné des tableaux, pastels, dessins et aquarelles de Pierre-Auguste Renoir being prepared by Guy Patrice Dauberville and Floriane Dauberville.

Condition Report:
The canvas has been lined and is very slightly buckled at center. The edges have been taped. The impasto has been well preserved particularly within the cream-colored pigments that highlight each rose. Under UV light no inpainting is apparent, though archival research by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute confirms that the darker background at top right (filling the upper-right-most two inch by two inch diagonal corner) as well as the initial R were amended by another hand. The work is in otherwise very good condition and presents well in its current state.

Provenance:
Ambroise Vollard, Paris (acquired by 1919)
Acquired circa 1950s
