Pierre Bonnard Discusses "a rough drawing" with French Art Historian

A 1p autograph "carte-lettre" in French signed by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), the Post-Impressionist artist, as "P Bonnard" at center. N.d., but the postmark indicates it was mailed on February 21, 1923 from Paris, France. Bonnard has also engrossed the partly pre-printed address section verso. A tiny piece of tape is found along the bottom edge. Wear includes isolated loss to the perforated edges, toning, and expected weathering, else near fine. 4.375" x 5.625." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Pierre Bonnard wrote this quick message to Gustave Coquiot (1865-1926). Coquiot was an art historian, art collector, and a secretary of French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Translated in full:

"Dear Monsieur Coquiot

I found my line at [illegible]. I thank you - You will find at the same place a little roll of gray paper containing a rough drawing -

P Bonnard."

Bonnard's sketch may have been related to a collaborative project. In 1926, for example, Coquiot edited an illustrated work entitled "En Suivant La Seine" [trans: "Following the Seine"] for which Pierre Bonnard was one of more than a dozen contributing artists. In 1923, Bonnard produced several oils on canvas including: "Nude Bending Down" (Tate Gallery); "In Front of the Window at Le Grand-Lemps" (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon); and "The Riviera" (The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.)

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
