Pierre Bonnard, Le Café

[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collector
Pierre Bonnard
1867 - 1947
Le Café

Signed Bonnard (upper left)
Oil on canvas
16 by 17 1/8 in. (40.6 by 43.5 cm)
Framed: 26 3/4 by 26 7/8 in. (68 by 68.2 cm)
Painted in 1907.

Condition Report:
Overall the work is in excellent condition. Canvas is not lined but appears to have been placed on a new stretcher. There are faint vertical stretcher bar marks visible in raking light. Surface remains richly textured in places. Some minor crazing to the varnish. There is one faint surface scratch near the lower right corner; otherwise fine. Under UV light: a layer of varnish is somewhat difficult to read through. Although some original pigments fluoresce, no inpainting is apparent.

Provenance:
Bernheim-Jeune, Paris (acquired from the artist in December 1930 and until at least 1936)

M. de la Chapelle, Paris (acquired by 1939)

Jean Chaigneau, Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Nice (acquired by 1944)

Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, Los Angeles

Samuel & Luella Maslon, Los Angeles & Minneapolis (acquired from the above on February 9, 1948 and sold: Sotheby's, New York, May 8, 2002, lot 9)

Acquired at the above sale
