Pierre-Jacques Cazes Venus and Adonis

[ translate ]

Pierre-Jacques Cazes
Paris 1676–1754
Venus and Adonis

oil on canvas
unframed: 82 x 102 cm.; 32¼ x 40⅛ in.
framed: 92.1 x 112.1 cm.; 36¼ x 44⅛ in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. The picture presents well and the figures appear to be well-preserved overall. Areas of old discoloured retouching are visibly in the sky upper right. Some of the darker tones in the background seem to have slightly sunken and lost definition with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the above confirms the above and further reveal a circular area of restoration in the lower left corner by the dog, an uneven fluorescing varnish across the left half of the picture, and small scattered areas of retouching, mostly in the sky. A more concentrated of retouching is visible across the lower margin. The picture is in overall good condition.

Provenance:
Anonymous sale, Paris, Sotheby's, 19 June 2007, lot 15;

Where acquired by the present owner.
