The sculptor was a pioneer of the 19th century animalier style, a style focusing on the realistic rendering of animals. Here the sculptor depicts the partnership between horse and man as the two together have just won a derby. The horse's head drops after giving his all and the rider looks straight ahead pleased with his victory and his teammate.
