Pierre Louis Bouvier, Swiss 1765-1836- Portrait of Jean-Dauphin de Chapeau Rouge; watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, inscribed and dated 'Bouvier / fait. Ems les Bains / 1826' (centre left), with extensive inscription (on the reverse), 24.5 x 19 cm. Note: De Chapeau Rouge (1770-1827) was a German merchant and first deputy mayor of Hamburg from 1811-13. His family had lived in Geneva since the 15th Century until his father immigrated to Hamburg in 1764 and acquired citizenship there. Jean-Dauphin founded the trading company 'De Chapeaurouge & Co' with his brothers, and inherited the luxurious 'Hammer Hof' estate in the east of Hamburg, upon his father's death in 1805.
Held in a gilded frame with some losses. The sheet lies flat. Minor and scattered spots of foxing. Evidence of abrasion on the left edge (lower) from contact with frame. Tiny losses, minor marks and surface dirt. Colours fresh and bright. Details are very well preserved. Not examined out of frame.
